Description

Haptoglobin binds free plasma hemoglobin released from erythrocytes with high affinity and thereby inhibits its oxidative activity. Recycling of the heme iron, prevents accumulation and damage to kidneys. The haptoglobin-hemoglobin complex will then be removed by the reticuloendothelial system (mostly the spleen). Haptoglobin is a serum protein that consists of two alpha and two beta chains connected by disulfide bridges. It acts as a hemoglobin scavenger and has been associated with protease inhibitory activity. Haptoglobin also acts as an antioxidant, has antibacterial activity and plays a role in modulating many aspects of the acute phase response
